How to Harness the Power of Web Directories

So you want exposure on the Internet? Of course you do. You want to drive people to your site, because that’s the only way your online business can succeed. And the more eyes you can get to your page, the better off you are. It’s common sense.

You’ve probably already thought of Google, and rightfully so. It’s the top search engine, so you want to make sure you’re a part of it. You may have also done some search engine optimization, and tweaked your site in certain ways so that Google will index you better. That’s a good start, but it’s also where many people go wrong.

The search engine marketing community often discusses this faux pas: people become obsessed with ranking on Google, and forget that there’s so much more to the Internet, so many more places where you can be found. It’s back to common sense again: don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Here are some reasons why:

- People use multiple search engines. According to Nielsen//NetRatings, 58% of the people who search on Google also use another search engine. The same is true for 70% of MSN searchers, and 71% of Yahoo searchers. - If the price seems too high, it’s probably not worth it. If you have a little money to invest, it’s a good idea to get into some of the paid inclusion directories. Pick and choose from some of the mid-level ones, and try to diversify your presence by picking some foreign directories, as well as some local ones. Designing Search Engine Friendly Web-Site

Designing a good looking web-site is not enough – one must ensure that quality customers visit it regularly. Search Engine being one of the most important sources of traffic to any web-site – web designers should pay enough attention to make their creation search engine friendly.

To understand search engine friendly features of any web-site, it is important to examine how a search engine works. There are essentially two kinds of search engines – directory and spider based search engines.

Directory Type Search Engine

This type of search engines list websites under categories (sometimes called category database). They have large number of categories to fit all kinds of web-pages. Largely managed by human beings, the two outstanding features of any directory are accuracy and selectivity.

Directories are extremely selective about web-pages to be accepted. A directory will not list your URL and will never become aware of your site unless you register with them. They do not make use of spiders or robots that crawl the web looking for new sites.

Examples of Directories are Yahoo, DMoz Open Directory. Look Smart etc.

Listing of a web-site in a directory type search engine depends a great deal on editorial policy of concerned directory. For example, Yahoo charges USD 300 to examine a business web-site within a specified time. The web-site is indexed if Yahoo editor finds it list-worthy. On the other hand, DMoz open directory works with voluntary editors and does not charge any money for inspection or indexing. However, the listing process may take long time.

Designer should check requirement of individual directories to decide on categories, title, meta tags etc. Submission for such directories should always be manual – one should not try automated submission for directory type search engines.

Listing in a quality directory is usually difficult and time consuming. However, the respect and page rank it provides is worth the effort.

Spider Based Search Engines

Unlike directory-type search engines, spider-based search engines (also called crawlers, robots, worms) seek out web-pages by ‘crawling’ through the WWW and automatically index sites using its own indexing rules or algorithm. It will not wait for you to submit, but try to seek out as many web-sites as it can find and index them.

By simply telling the search engine what your URL is, its software robot will go there automatically and index everything they need. How much it will index and to what degree depends upon its algorithm – usually a closely guarded secret.

Overwhelming number of search-engines in the WWW are spider-based. Examples are – Google, AltaVista, Lycos, InfoSeek etc.

Getting listed in a spider based web-site is not difficult – all it takes is to submit your web-site URL – manually or through an automated process. However, position of your web-site in search result (popularly called ranking) will depend upon many factors – some within your control, others beyond. We shall discuss these factors in detail in a future article series

How to make a Web-Site Spider-Friendly

While listing in a directory or high ranking in spider based search engine require special effort – certain design features can help you considerably. Besides, there are certain negative design features that can create difficulties for search engine spiders, keeping your web-site outside the reach of search engines.

Frames

Frames is a technique of splitting browser’s screen into number of windows for displaying various kinds of information. It used to be a popular technique of web-designing in the 90′s. However, frames can confuse a search engine spider so much that it may abandon the web-page or index it wrongly.

It is better not to use frames. Even search engines capable of indexing a site through frames don’t recommend it. Whatever you are trying to accomplish by using frames can usually be done with the help of Cascading Style Sheet (CSS). Some browsers are not frames-compatible, so there is additional danger of visitors not being able to see your site at all. Bookmarking of individual pages within a frame becomes difficult without lengthy scripts being written.

Flash/Graphics Based Web Sites

While web sites that offer visitor more esthetically-pleasing experience may seem like the best choice for someone searching for your product, they are the most difficult to optimize. Since search engine robots cannot read text within graphics or animation, what they see may be just a small amount of text – and small amounts of content may not result in top rankings. If you really must offer the visitor a graphics-heavy or Flash web site, consider creating an html-based side of your site that is also available to visitors. This site will be much easier to promote on the search engines and your new found visitors will also have the option to jump over to the nicer looking part of your site.

Dynamic Web Pages

Content in a dynamic web-site resides within a database – outside the reach of most spiders. URL of dynamic pages from such databases are usually long and have characters such as ?, #, &, %, or = along with seemingly random numbers or letters – enough to confuse any spider. As a result, search engines may leave a dynamic web-site or at best index it partially.

Improper Use of HTML

Inefficiently designed web-pages that use large amount of html codes for fonts, colors, lines etc. – specially in the beginning of the page can cause negative impact. What search engine robots see in such poorly designed pages are clutters of font and formatting tags, very little text.

If possible, designers should avoid too much html tags, javascripts etc. in the beginning of a web-page. Efficient designers write codes in such a way that such elements do not form part of web-pages (e.g. using CSS). Hand coded HTML to design sites is also a good method for proficient designers

Meta Tags

Meta tags is a way of storing information about a web-page. Information stored in meta tags is usually not visible by browsers but easily accessible by search engine spiders. It is a way of informing spiders about content of the web-page, relevant keywords, how to index etc.

In the absence of meta tags, spiders may index web-pages in its own way – which could be quite un-predictive. It is far more prudent to guide the spider with desirable information so that the web-page gets indexed under right keywords.

A few simple steps in the beginning of design process may go a long way in making sure your web-site attracts customers. Success of a business web-site is gauged not by its look – but how much it helps in business.

Driving Traffic to Your Web Site

It’s the question so many people ask: how do I bring more users to my web site? It might seem like a simple question, but it is not. Although the answer to this question seems to change on daily basis, there are a few things you can do to boost traffic to your web site.

Search Engine Placement A big way to increase traffic is making sure you are indexed by the search engines, and then trying to increase your ranking. This is another article all together, but here are a few pointers. Make sure your site is “search engine friendly” and that the search engines can index your site. Check that your META tags are in order and correct. Put together a list of keywords that you would like to key in on and make sure those words/phrases are incorporated into your site. Also try to keep your keywords as specific as possible. It is extremely hard to rank high for broad keywords. Make sure the content you have on your site is quality content and grammatically correct. If writing content is not your strong point, hire a copywriter or web developer to help.

Web Directories Get your site listed in as many web directories as possible. Web directories are sites that list sites by categories. Try to find some directories that specialize in your industry. For example, if your site is about real estate then try to get your site into as many real estate directories as possible. The Yahoo Directory is probably the best directory, but it’s not free. Getting into these directories can also help with search engine ranking.

Link Exchanges When you think about it, getting traffic is a numbers game. The more exposure you get the more chances that people will come to your site. The idea behind a link exchange is you find other sites that compliment your site, and then contact the owner to see if they will put a link to your site on their site. In return, you add a link on your site to their web site. This has been an integral part of the internet for years and it is a proven way to increase traffic.

Writing Articles and Newsletters In order to bring people back your site, you need a good hook. Providing a newsletter or articles on your site that people would be interested in reading is a good start. Once you write these articles you can post them on some article directories to get some traffic to your site. Newsletters are also good for getting residual business from your existing customers. Another good idea is to have a blog. Everyone else has one, so why not you?

Cost Per Click (CPC) Advertising Cost Per Click advertising has been the money maker for companies like Google, MSN, and Yahoo. Whenever you do a search on Google, you see that box of paid listings on the right. Companies pay for every person that clicks their ad, hence the cost per click name. The weird thing is that Google can somehow see how interested the user is in your site and then charge you more for that click. That might sound retarded, but its great when you pay less for the clicks that only visit your front page and then leave. I highly recommend Google Adwords to all of my clients as a cost effective way to get traffic to your web site.

While there are many other ways to get more traffic to your web site, this should be a good starting point. The key to getting more traffic is getting your site’s name out there. Post it everywhere you can and with every thing you do. It’s a long process, but well worth the effort.

PHP , Internet Business Marketing , & Good Web Content Go Hand

Everyone has heard that content is king when it comes to search engine optimization and just good old plain web site marketing smarts. But how you present that content on your site can also make a world of difference.

PHP is a server-side, cross-platform, HTML embedded scripting language that lets you create dynamic web pages. PHP-enabled web pages are treated just like regular HTML pages and you can create and edit them the same way you normally create regular HTML pages.

Now here is were it gets interesting. Search engines like Google Yahoo and MSN love fresh new content that is changing on a daily basis. But if you are using a java script snippet the search engines will not be able to read the content. If however you are using a PHP type script the content will automatically be transformed into HTML and the search engines will be able to pick it up and read it.

The first thing you will need to do before you jump onto the PHP bandwagon is to make sure your web host provider has PHP support. Most do but if you are only paying for basic services or using a free host you may have to pay for an upgrade. It’s well worth it trust me.

One of the best PHP based scripts you can add to any web site is the forum or bulletin board. Forums will take on a life of their own after several 100 members have joined and are posting threads on a daily basis. If 100 members seems like a lot think again. I have one work from home internet business forum and after just 2 month I already have over 70 members. Each time someone posts to the forum the HTML changes and the search engines treat it as new content.

Another great PHP script you can add is the link directory. You can actually set up a categorized reciprocal link directory with 20 links on each page and the process is completely automated. I have mine set up so that I have to approve each link first but if you want you could by pass this so that once your script is set up the directory will just start to grow all on its own with no additional work on your part. Again each time someone adds a new link you HTML page is changing. Make sure you add categories that are relative to your main theme. My directory for example has categories for work from home , internet business and business opportunities because that’s what my web site is all about. Also make sure you have added instructions on how they can link back to you. This is the reason why I like to approve all my liks first. No reciprocal link back to my site NO directory listing.

PHP can also be used for blogging. WordPress is one of the most popular PHP script based blogging tools. I have not used WordPress but I do use blogger for all my blogging. A weblog (usually shortened to blog, but occasionally spelled web log) is a web-based publication consisting primarily of periodic articles (normally in reverse chronological order). Although most early weblogs were manually updated, tools to automate the maintenance of such sites made them accessible to a much larger population, and the use of some sort of browser-based software is now a typical aspect of “blogging”. With a blog or web log you can make daily posts on almost any subject matter creating new content for the search engines to crawl. To date Yahoo seems to be giving a bit of an edge to all my blogs incuding my work form home internet business news site. Ironically most of the post on that blog come from yahoo and or Google news. This is a great way to get free content on a daily basis for your blog. Just go to Google news or yahoo news and type in the keywords you are using for your blog. Each day there will be a new news article that you can legally use on your blog.

There are many more PHP scripts that you can use on your website to automatically create fresh new content with. The ones listed above are the ones I have downloaded for free and installed to my web host. If you are not using PHP now is a good time to get started.

SEO Duplicate Web Content Penalty Myth Exploded

The “duplicate content penalty” myth is one of the biggest obstacles I face in getting web professionals to embrace reprint content. The myth is that search engines will penalize a site if much of its content is also on other websites.

Clarification: there is a real duplicate content penalty for content that is duplicated with minor or no variation across the pages of a single site. There is also a “mirror” penalty for a site that is more or less substantially duplicating another single site. What I’m talking about here is the reprint of pages of content individually, rather than in a mass, on multiple sites.

Another clarification: “penalty” is a loaded concept in SEO. “Penalty” means that search engines will punish a website for violations of the engine’s terms of service. The punishment can mean making it less likely that the site will appear in search results. Punishment can also mean removal from the search engine’s index of web pages (“de-indexing” or “delisting”).

How have I exploded the “duplicate content penalty” myth?

* PageRank. Many thousands of high-PageRank sites reprint content and provide content for reprint. The most obvious case is the news wires such as Reuters (PR 8) and the Associated Press (PR 9) that reprint to sites such as www.nytimes.com (PR 10).

* The proliferation of content reprint sites. There are now hundreds of websites devoted to reprint content because it’s a cheap, easy magnet for web traffic, especially search engine traffic.

* Experience. I’ve seen significant search engine traffic both from distributing content to be reprinted and from reprinting content on the site.

How I Doubled Search Engine Traffic with Reprint Content

When I first started distributing content for my main site, I was stunned by the highly targeted traffic I got from visitors clicking on the link at the end of the article. Search engine traffic also slowly increased both from the links and from having content on the site.

But I was even more stunned with the search engine traffic I got when I started putting reprint articles on the site in September. I had written quite a number of reprint articles for clients and accumulated a few webmaster “fans” who looked out for my articles to reprint them. I wanted to make it easier for them to find all the reprint articles I had written.

I didn’t want to draw too much attention to these articles, which had nothing to do with the main subject of the site, web content. So I secluded the articles in one section of the site.

The articles got a surprising amount of search engine traffic. The traffic was overwhelmingly from Google, and for long multiple-word search strings that just happened to be in the article word for word.

Why was I surprised with all the search engine traffic?

1. The articles had so little link popularity. The link popularity to the articles came primarily from a single link to the “reprint content” page from the homepage, which linked to category pages, which linked to the articles themselves–three clicks from the homepage. The sitemap was enormous, well over 100 links, so its PageRank contribution was minimal. Since these articles were on the site such a short time I strongly doubt they got any links from other sites.

2. The articles had so much competition. These articles had been reprinted far more widely than the average reprint article, which is lucky if it makes it into a few dedicated reprint sites. As part of my service I had done most of the legwork of reprinting my clients’ articles for them. In fact, I guarantee at least 100 reprints on Google-indexed web pages either for each article or group of articles. So that’s up to 100 web pages, sometimes more, that were competing with my web page to appear in search engine results for the search string.

Web Content Mass + Keyword Optimization + Links = SEO

How does web content really affect SEO? It’s often said that the answer is simply that content does not affect SEO very much-it’s all about more technical issues. Yet a website’s content still plays an enormous and fairly direct role in search engine ranking.

Of course, the whole goal of the search engines’ ranking schemes is precisely to deliver good, relevant content to users. The mechanism for how search engines select and reward good, relevant content is essentially just a technical issue, though admittedly an extremely important technical issue.

But even in purely technical, mechanistic, terms, web content affects search engine rankings three ways:

1. inbound links

2. website mass

3. keyword optimization

1. Web Content and Inbound Links

Inbound links are the number-one factor in getting search engine rankings. They also yield plenty of traffic on their own. The importance of links is what has led many people to say that content is no longer important. But those people forget that content really does play a big role in getting links in the first place:

At the very least, good content will make potential link partners more comfortable with linking to your site. No one wants to link to a link farm, splog, junk site, or even just an unprofessional-looking site. Lots of good content gives other webmasters (and particularly bloggers) a reason to link to your site spontaneously without being asked. You can allow other websites to post your content in exchange for a link back to your site.

2. Web Content Mass

More web pages of content = more search engine traffic

Here’s why:

Adding pages to your site is like putting out extra nets to catch surfers. Search engines see bigger websites as more prestigious and reliable. The more content you have, the more reasons you give other webmasters, particularly bloggers, to link to your site spontaneously, without being asked.

3. Web Content Keyword Optimization

Keyword optimization used to be the most important step in SEO. Now it matters little in ranking for highly competitive keywords.

Still, keyword optimization can really help you get traffic from searches not on competitive keywords. While you may never rank number 1 for “finance,” you may still show up tops for a search on “household finance rent federal tax deductions” if you have that phrase somewhere in your content. Such non-competitive searches make up a very large proportion of total web searches.
